Egenera Announces Four-Processor, Eight-Core Processing Blade Based on Dual-Core Intel Xeon Multi-Processor Technology

—Company Continues to Pioneer the Delivery of High-End Blades—

Marlboro, Mass.—November 2, 2005—Egenera Inc., a leader in utility computing, has expanded its line of Egenera® Processing BladeTM configurations with a four-processor, eight-socket offering incorporating the dual-core Intel® Xeon® processor 7000 sequence, formerly codenamed "Paxville MP" technology for multi-processor platforms. According to Intel, the new processor delivers up to a 60 percent performance gain over its prior-generation technology.

Specifically, the new blade contains four 3 GHz Intel EM64T processors with an 800 MHz front-side bus, and supports up to 32 GB of DDR2 memory. The new processors incorporate Intel Virtualization Technology (VT), which allows virtual machines to run and be managed more easily.

"Egenera Processing Blade configurations based on the dual-core Intel Xeon processor deliver the excellent price/performance balance customers seek as they provision their datacenters," said Susan Davis, vice president of marketing and product management at Egenera. "Among other applications, customers running complex databases will benefit from this high-performance, high-memory blade. Today's announcement continues our track record of being among the first to the market with high-end blades based on Intel processor technology. We're also continuing to maintain the same 1U form factor for maximum flexibility and easy upgradeability."

"Egenera Processing Blades implementing the new dual-core Intel Xeon processors address customers' needs for improved productivity and performance," said Kirk Skaugen, general manager, server platforms group, Intel. "Egenera has taken a user-oriented approach to Processing Blade development, providing customers with excellent performance and value to address their business-computing needs."

Within the Egenera BladeFrame® system, Processing Blade modules provide the capacity to run applications. These stateless resources enable automated allocation, repurposing and failover since any server can assume the identity of any other server. Also within the Egenera BladeFrame, 80 percent of the I/O devices on a legacy server have been transformed into software, delivering unparalleled flexibility and reliability. Moreover, a single BladeFrame system can simultaneously run Processing Blades with various processor architectures and operating systems, enabling customers to automatically align computing resources to application requirements and scale performance dynamically. The new Egenera Processing Blade based on the eight-core Intel Xeon processor will be commercially available in Q1 of 2006.
