Egenera Founder Vern Brownell Honored as an Entrepreneur Of The Year by Ernst & Young

Marlboro, Mass.--July 1, 2002--Egenera Inc., the leader in next-generation data center infrastructure, announced today that its founder, chairman and chief technology officer, Vern Brownell, has received the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award for New England in the Emerging Entrepreneur category. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Award honors individuals whose ingenuity, hard work and innovation have created successful and growing business ventures. As a regional recipient, Brownell is now a candidate for Ernst & Young's National Entrepreneur Of The Year Award, to be announced this fall.

"Driven by a powerful idea, Vern built Egenera to solve a complex, business-critical challenge for the world's most demanding and sophisticated users of technology," said Debbie Miller, president and CEO, Egenera. "The result is a disruptive, breakthrough platform that delivers quantifiable value to our growing roster of blue-chip customers. We congratulate Vern on this significant and well-deserved recognition of his vision and entrepreneurial spirit."

The former chief technology officer at Goldman Sachs, Brownell founded Egenera in March 2000 based on the pain points he experienced-and opportunities he recognized-managing one of the world's largest data centers. Despite preferred relationships with leading server vendors, Brownell was unable to source a processing solution that would allow Goldman to simultaneously optimize application availability, improve business agility and lower costs. Convinced that a totally new architecture was required, he resigned his executive post and formed Egenera.

Before joining Goldman, Brownell held a series of engineering management positions including roles at Stratus Computer and Digital Equipment. His background as both a developer and a user of technology gave Egenera the ideal perspective for building the next generation of computing infrastructure.
