Fujitsu Siemens Computers PAN Manager® by Egenera FAQ

Q.

What did Egenera announce?

A.

Egenera announced that that it will make Egenera® PAN Manager software available on other vendors’ hardware platforms as part of a new software line of business.

Egenera believes that releasing PAN Manager on third-party hardware platforms will help move the industry beyond server virtualization (“Virtualization 1.0”) into the next phase of virtualization (“Virtualization 2.0”) much more quickly.

Q.

What exactly is PAN Manager?

A.

PAN Manager is Egenera’s core software – based on the patented Processing Area Network (PAN) architecture – that delivers Data Center Virtualization by combining server virtualization with network and storage virtualization to transform IT infrastructure into flexible, scalable assets that can be allocated as needed – resulting in rapid time to market, dynamic scalability and cost-effective high availability.

Egenera PAN Manager software replaces hardware infrastructure and I/O with software – virtualizing compute, storage and networking resources that can be dynamically allocated as business requirements dictate.  Egenera PAN Manager virtualization software creates networks of virtual and physical servers, and can move individual servers, groups of servers or entire systems from one place to another seamlessly, securely and with verifiable disaster recovery and uptime.

Q.

What is the proposed value of PAN Manager on other platforms?

A.

Integrating PAN Manager with third-party platforms outside of the company’s own Egenera® BladeFrame® system will enable customers to leverage the benefits of the industry’s most sophisticated and advanced Data Center Virtualization software in a much broader fashion, while increasing Egenera’s market opportunity and global distribution channels.

Q.

What companies will sell PAN Manager on their own hardware?

A.

To date, we have announced that Fujitsu Siemens Computers plans to integrate Egenera PAN Manager software with its PRIMERGY server line as one part of its FlexFrame Infrastructure. Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ press release, “SOI for SOA goes Plug-and-Play” is available here. Subsequent announcements will be made going forward.

Q.

Why would partners be interested in selling Egenera software on their hardware?

A.

Our customers tell us we’re years ahead of what any other vendor offers in the market and as a result, our software gives partners an immediate competitive advantage. They’re able to move much more quickly to the next phase of virtualization with rapid time-to-market.

Q.

Why are you selling through partners and not directly?

A.

We’re maximizing our opportunity through the established and far larger distribution channels of our partners. We believe this is the ideal go-to-market strategy.

Q.

Will Egenera continue to focus on its own integrated hardware/software offerings?

A.

Yes. Egenera will continue to innovate and advance the BladeFrame family of products. A high-performance, integrated hardware/software solution designed for business and mission critical computing, the Egenera BladeFrame system remains a critical piece of Egenera’s technology roadmap moving forward.

Q.

How is Egenera PAN Manager different than VMware?

A.

Egenera provides complementary technology to VMware’s server virtualization solutions.  However, each company’s approach and value proposition is different.

As the leading hypervisor in the industry, VMware ESX provides an effective means for consolidating hardware and increasing utilization on a single server, among other benefits.

Egenera PAN Manager software virtualizes both above and below the operating system, beyond a single server, to allow customers to create and manage networks of both virtual and physical servers.  Computing assets – whether virtual machines or physical servers represented logically within a Processing Area Network (PAN) – are deployed and managed in exactly the same fashion with verifiable disaster recovery and high availability.

Egenera refers to this next phase of virtualization as “Data Center Virtualization” or what industry analysts have begun to coin as “Virtualization 2.0.”

Q.

How do customers use PAN Manager software today?

A.

PAN Manager has been developed over seven years and has been in production for more than five.  It is deployed at hundreds of enterprises, service providers and government organizations globally, providing management simplicity, agility, high availability and verifiable disaster recovery for mission and business critical applications.

PAN Manager allows customers such as the U.S. Department of Defense Military Health System to better support United States wounded warriors by ensuring high security, uptime, utilization and simplicity of critical systems; Pioneer Investments utilizes Egenera as the architecture to support it dynamic repurposing environment for the rapid allocation of resources 24x7x365; and Savvis Communications built its successful utility hosting service on Egenera technology.  Many more examples of how customers utilize PAN Manager are available at our news release and customer case study hubs.

Q.

What is Egenera’s new market opportunity with this strategy?

A.

PAN Manager’s capabilities span the Virtualization, Provisioning and Clustering/Availability software markets.  According to industry analysts, the total revenue from these markets in 2006 was an estimated $3B is forecast to grow to about $6.7B over the next five years.  This opportunity is additive to Egenera’s current addressable opportunity within the worldwide server market.  Based on Egenera’s focus on Medium to Large Enterprise and the Public Sector, we estimate that our addressable market within the server market is over $25B.
