Egenera Simplifies Management of Virtual and Physical Resources

- Egenera Ships PAN vmBuilder Software 2.1 -

MARLBORO, Mass.November 11, 2008 — Egenera, Inc. today announced the general availability of PAN vmBuilder software by Egenera®, version 2.1.  PAN vmBuilder software seamlessly integrates Citrix XenServer™ virtual machine (VM) management technology, allowing administrators to fully manage virtual and physical server environments unencumbered by the complexities of individual management tools.

Integrated seamlessly into PAN Manager® software by Egenera, PAN vmBuilder allows customers to easily allocate both a full or a portion of a server based on the needs of the application or service.  This approach completely eliminates the complexity of managing virtual machines and physical servers with disparate tools – freeing up IT staff for other projects.

“Our partnership with Egenera enables customers to further leverage their XenServer adoption to manage their physical and virtual machines in a truly unified manner,” said Lou Shipley, group vice president and general manager, XenServer Product Group, Citrix Systems. “By leveraging PAN vmBuilder with Citrix technology, customers can significantly reduce the complexity in their data centers.”

New in PAN vmBuilder Software 2.1

PAN vmBuilder software, 2.1 leverages XenServer 4.1 technology, and includes the following new features:

  • Updated guest operating system support including Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL) 64-bit operating system;
  • Live migration support enables movement of a VM from one physical host to another within the pool of servers under the same administrative control, with zero downtime;
  • Suspend / Resume functionality facilitates the movement of VMs between servers for maintenance and rapid hardware reallocation; and
  • Memory ballooning allows users to reallocate memory among VMs running on the same hypervisor and supports greater flexibility in making changes to VM requirements.

“Today’s mixed virtual and physical environments are the standard, not the exception, and data center administrators have more to monitor and manage than ever before,” said Pete Manca, executive vice president of engineering and CTO at Egenera.  “Complexity has reached a high point, impacting productivity and creating hurdles to achieving a reliable dynamic data center.  Leveraging leading VM technology from Citrix, PAN vmBuilder software is able to significantly reduce the complexities of managing both physical servers and virtual machines.   It allows our customers to work with a single interface and one tool to achieve the same enterprise-class capabilities for virtual machines as provided for their physical servers.”

PAN vmBuilder software by Egenera is available immediately and is offered as an add-on to PAN Manager software by Egenera, which is available across multiple hardware platforms.  For more information call 508-858-2600.
